What
is Broadband?
“Broadband” is a
generic term for any form of Internet access that allows the
fast transmission of data. The main types of Broadband used in
the UK are Leased Lines, Cable Broadband, ADSL, SDSL, Radio Broadband
and Satellite Broadband.
A Broadband connection is capable
of transferring data many times faster than a conventional PSTN
(analogue) or ISDN (digital) phone or data line.
In simple terms, this means that
files can be downloaded or sent many times faster than normal,
resulting in a more efficient and less frustrating service!
What
is ADSL Broadband?
ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber
Line) is a broadband service provided using the UK telephone
network. Data is transmitted using existing copper telephone
lines and no new lines need to be installed.
An ADSL connection is capable
of transmitting data at up to 2mb/s (that’s almost 40 times
faster than a conventional connection)
ADSL lines are able to support
data and voice transmission at the same time enabling calls to
be made whilst online without the need for a separate data line.
Why do
I want ADSL Broadband?
ADSL Broadband is superior to
conventional forms of Internet access in almost every way.
Features and benefits are:
- It’s fast – large files can
be downloaded in minutes, not hours. Web pages appear almost
instantly. A faster connection leads to increased efficiency
and allows greater use of the Internet without spending hours
online.
- It’s always on – ADSL Broadband
is connected permanently. There is no waiting to connect.
- It’s low cost - A fixed monthly
fee of as little as £22.99+vat means that the Internet
can be used constantly without the fear of large phone bills.
Budgets can be set accurately.
- Simultaneous phone and Internet access – Calls
can be made whilst online using the same phone line. No separate
data line is needed - further reducing costs.
How
much does it cost?
The three costs that you will
incur are:
- Connection charge – this is a
once only charge and is fixed at £50 + vat.
- Hardware cost – you will require
a suitable DSL modem (single PC) or router (multiple PC’s)
and at least 1 micro-filter.
- Monthly rental – this fixed cost
covers all monthly rental for the service
Frequently

Q. Can I receive ADSL?
A. To receive the service, you
must be situated within 5.5km (3.6 miles) of an enabled telephone
exchange. You must have a BT analogue phone line.
Q. What does “asymmetric” mean?
A. Asymmetric means that the
data transfer speed is not the same in both directions. Transfer
speeds are available of up to 256kb/s upstream and 2mb/s down
stream.
Q. How long will it take to activate
my account?
A. Activation times are 5-10
working days from receipt of order.
Q. What is “contention”
A. Contention means that the
total bandwidth available is being shared with other users – i.e.
you are contending for the bandwidth. As noted above, there may
be either 49 or 19 other users sharing the same bandwidth as
you.
